What is Strep

Strep throat is usually contracted from other individuals infected with Streptococcus bacteria. The infection attacks your tonsils and throat, and can be very serious if left untreated. Left unchecked, strep throat can spread in individuals with a weakened immune system – causing sinus and ear infections. In rare cases, complications can lead to rheumatic fever, which causes inflammation of the heart and blood vessels. What I am trying to say here is strep needs to be treated before things get out of hand.

Diagnosing Strep Throat

The number one indication of strep throat is white puss pockets on the throat and tonsils. These puss pockets are usually accompanied by a fever, usually above 101˚F. Other common symptoms of strep throat are listed below.

  • A sudden fever
  • Chills
  • White patches on your throat
  • Headache
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Difficulty swallowing

The only way to be 100% certain you have strep is to get a rapid home test, or have a doctor perform a rapid strep test. With this said, all the natural remedies below are beneficial for any type of sore throat, tonsillitis, or sickness in general. in summary, don’t hesitate to try the recommendations below!

Antibiotics Disclaimer

The typical antibiotic treatment for strep throat causes many nasty long-term side effects. You are harboring millions of beneficial bacteria inside you that are much needed for healthy immune function. Antibiotic treatment is known to kill massive amounts of beneficial bacteria and in some cases do more harm than good.

With this said, if the infection starts to get worse after home remedies, or if the infection lingers, antibiotics can be a last resort before things turn to worse.

Natural Remedies

Exposing the throat to natural antibacterial supplements such as garlic and oregano oil is much more beneficial than just taking the supplements in pill form. If you have contracted strep, the majority of infection is isolated in your throat and tonsils. For the best recovery time, try to maximize physical contact between the infected throat and the antibacterial supplements listed below.

Garlic – Contains allicin, which has known antifungal and antibiotic properties. Garlic is a great supplement to take during sickness and especially strep throat! It is an immune booster that will help you kick the infection to the curb. Take 1000-2000mg 3 times daily, or 1-2 cloves 3 times daily. Eating raw garlic is, in my opinion, the most beneficial remedy for strep throat. If you can handle eating spicy garlic, or deal with garlic breath, this remedy can be very beneficial.

Oregano Oil – Oregano Oil is a natural antibiotic that will not disturb intestinal flora like antibiotics do. Consume 500mg 2-3 times daily until the infection is 100% gone. In addition, try gargling with oregano oil for fast benefits!

Vitamin C – This should be a go to no matter the sickness. With its immune boosting and high antioxidant properties, Vitamin C aids the body in a fast recovery. I recommend 6,000-10,000 mg per day while you are sick. Your body will utilize massive amounts of vitamin C during illness making it nearly impossible to overdose.

Echinacea and Goldenseal – Taken together, these herbs act as a dynamic duo to help rid harmful bacteria from your body.  Echinacea stimulates the body’s production of phagocytes which fight bacterial infection and virus-infected cells. Goldenseal has strong antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties. Taken together they work to stimulate and aid the immune system.  Take 1000 mg of an Echinacea/Goldenseal blend supplement 3 times daily until the sickness has subsided.

Gargle for Fast Results

Sodium Tetraborate – Known to few, Borax (aka sodium tetraborate) makes for a safe antiseptic and antibacterial gargle. If you have a low tolerance for gargling with gross tinctures, Borax may be the perfect solutions for you. Mix ½ tsp in a cup of warm water and gargle 3-4 times daily. The taste is barely noticeable, but the effects are amazing. Give it a try!

Apple Cider Vinegar – Gargling with ACV helps to establish an acidic ph in your throat. Streptococcus bacteria, along with other bacteria, have a hard time surviving in highly acidic environment. Apple cider vinegar also contains live cultures (probiotics) that will fight harmful bacteria on contact. If ACV is too acidic to gargle with, mix it with water to dilute the solution.

Baking Soda and Salt Water – This solution is meant to help calm inflammation and the pain of a sore throat. This remedy is fact acting and will help calm the irritation on contact. Adding salt to the tincture helps pull fluids out of the throat flushing out bacteria. Try this gargle after the above recommendations as a throat “cleanse”.

My Favorite Remedy – Garlic Tea

Three simple ingredients for fast-acting soar throat relief: water, garlic cloves, and honey.  In a saucepan, bring 3 cups of water and 5-8 cloves of garlic to a boil. Turn off the heat when the water boils, add 1/4 cup of honey, and strain.

This very simple yet very effective remedy is not as disgusting as it sounds. Incorporating raw honey to the tea not only improves the taste, but also adds a kick of antibacterial activity. Garlic tea is my favorite remedy and works like a charm! I drink this tea as much as possible during strep throat or sickness.
