Why Seek Support?

Those diagnosed with cancer often experience a wide range of emotions that be hard to express. It is extremely hard for others to understand what it is like to have a potentially life-threatening disease. With so many mixed emotions and no certainty for what lies ahead, life can be hard and often very scary.

Finding a community of like-minded individuals in similar situations can create an opportunity to form connections and make new friends. Because each individual in a cancer group is undergoing similar struggles, it is much easier to talk about hard topics knowing others will understand. Meeting new people and making connections is also a great way to take your mind off things. Support groups are not based on negativity, but rather on celebrating what is good in life, making new friends, progression through trials, and discussions about what is working and what isn’t.

Online Cancer Support

It can be very beneficial emotionally to find an online cancer community to be a part of. The best part about finding a community online is that you can connect with others for support, suggestions, and communication while in the comfort of your own home. Support is at the tip of your fingertips and most groups can be reached through your Smartphone!

Often online support forums or groups are separated based on age or condition. This means that everyone in the group is dealing with similar issues. Cancer Support Groups

Online forums or groups do not provide the physical contact and experience that support groups can provide. Living with cancer can be extremely stressful and scary. Sometimes even the closest family members or friends cannot understand what it is like to have a life-threatening illness.

Having a safe place to meet with peers in the same situation as you can be beneficial for coping with stress or fears. Having the ability to talk with others who truly understand what you are going through provides a sense of relief and often promotes a feeling of belonging and understanding.

There are many types of support groups but most can be combined into three classifications. If one type of support group doesn’t feel right for you, do not give up before trying the other types of groups! The three main groups are listed below.

  • Member-led or self-help groups are often facilitated by group members.
  • Professional-led groups are often managed by a training counselor, social worker, or physiologist.
  • Informational support groups are typically managed by professionals who provide cancer-related information. These groups often invite other professional speakers such as doctors to share additional insight.
