Microbes Are Everywhere!

Microbes are tiny one-celled organisms that dominate the world around us. They are everywhere including inside us. They can be beneficial to us (normal flora), or harmful (Pathogens). Microbes include a broad spectrum of organisms including viruses, bacteria, and Protozoa.

This post primarily focuses on harmful pathogens and how they are causing disease!


Pathogens are classified according to their virulence (how harmful the pathogen is). The pathogens you may be familiar with include polio, AIDS, smallpox, and others. You are familiar with these pathogens because of their very high-virulent nature. These pathogens take a bold approach to their conquest – staying alive and replicating inside the body – and cause insidious side effects in the process.

On the other hand, other pathogens take a more subtle approach. These pathogens are classified as stealth pathogens and are low virulent. Low-Virulent microbes take a stealth approach in their attempt to invade your system. If they are able to fly under the immune system’s radar, they will slowly degrade your health. If left unchecked, pathogens can cause disease in the long run.

Stealth Pathogens

Most of us come into contact with stealth microbes each day. These organisms are literally everywhere. You may come in contact with microbes at work, school, home, or anywhere in-between. Listed below are some common types of stealth pathogens.

  • Herpes Virus-6
  • Epstein-Bar Virus
  • Coxsackie Virus
  • Mycoplasma
  • Adenovirus

A healthy immune system will usually handle exposure to pathogens efficiently. When these critters meet an individual with a compromised immune system it is a different story. Pathogens have the ability to slowly establish a grip inside you with little side effects initially. Even if you are feeling “ok” the pathogen may still have a grip on you.

There are a million things that could lead to a compromise immune system. The biggest factors include daily emotional and physical stress, exposure to environmental toxins or chemicals, and ingesting unhealthy foods or substances. Once exposed to a pathogen, if your immune system is not up to par, the invader will begin to slowly compromise your health.

We all know that increased levels of inflammation in the body over long periods of time can cause a variety of diseases and health conditions. We also know that the mainstream science likes to deem free radicals as a cause of cancer and many other diseases. What most fail to see is that these pesky pathogens have the ability to cause inflammation and increased levels of free radicals in the body!

How Do Pathogens Cause Disease?

Mycoplasma is a tiny elusive bacteria about the size of a virus. Unlike other bacteria, mycoplasma lacks a cell wall. It could be compared to a jelly fish (very pliable and able to change shape easily).

The unique characteristics of mycoplasma give it the ability to change shape. In turn, this allows the organism to bind to structures that lay within the mitochondrial membrane. Remember the mitochondria is responsible for creating energy rich molecules for the cell. In essence, the mitochondria are responsible for powering the cell and keeping it healthy.

When the bacteria form a bond within the mitochondrial membrane, it blocks electron flow – thus radically reducing energy output in the mitochondria. But how does this translate to disease?

Our cells recognize the disturbance of electron/energy flow and a protective response is activated within the cell. Free radicals such as hydrogen peroxide are then produced by the cell to protect from the pathogen. However this defense mechanism is often times not strong enough to eliminate bacteria, and over time it is harmful to the cell. That is, our cells are not able to produce enough free radicals to kill the pathogen. This defense mechanism can be thought of as a cry for help.

Free radicals are often seen as a culprit in the disease process. At Delta, we see free radicals as a well-intended defense mechanism, not the initial culprit. Left unchecked this defective defense mechanism can lead to cell damage, DNA impairment, and disease. Many of the other pathogens cause disease in very similar ways. The main takeaway is that pathogens cause increased inflammation and oxidative stress within the body. In turn, these factors will lead to disease if left unchecked.

How To Test Yourself for Pathogens

To check if pathogens are affecting your health, the easiest method is to test your IgG and IgM level to the typical pathogens (Herpes Virus-6, Epstein-Bar Virus, Coxsackie Virus, Mycoplasma, Adenovirus) If you level are above normal and you have not been “sick” recently, pathogens are to blame.

Keeping an eye on how much oxidative stress the body is enduring can be helpful as well although, high amounts oxidative stress could mean a number of things. Some causes of high oxidative stress within the body include:

  • Toxins or chemicals in food,
  • Over-the-counter of prescription drugs
  • Radiation
  • Pathogens
  • High amounts of emotional and physical stress


In summary, when stealth pathogens are introduced to someone with a weakened immune system, the body will usually try to defend against the intruders by increasing inflammation, free radical production, and through other means. It is important to remember that in the short term, acute inflammation and free radical production can be very beneficial. When the immune system is not up and to par and is unable to fight the invaders off initially, a marathon of systematic inflammation ensue. Over long periods of time, the body’s attempts to get rid of pathogens begin to backfire and the result is often disease.
